Microcosmic Garden

This isn’t my first review of an Art & Fable puzzle, but it’s the first one I ever constructed and still one of my favorites. Some time ago a friend sent me a message saying, “You love mantises and jigsaw puzzles, it’s like this one was made for you.” I clicked on the link, and fell in love pretty quickly with Art & Fable a few days later, when I opened my first A&F delivery.

The experience starts with the shipping box — I kid you not. When you open the box and find the individually wrapped puzzle boxes inside, you already feel like you’re in for a special experience. The puzzle boxes themselves are beautiful. Each puzzle includes not only a cardboard reference image, you also get a fold-out stand that holds the box top upright while you complete the puzzle.

When you handle Art & Fable puzzle pieces for the first time you’ll really understand my love for this brand — the pieces feel like art. They’re sturdy; their solid weight tells you how high quality the physical production is. And of course, you’ll see the vivid contrast in the colors, as if every copy of the puzzle was painted individually, not mass produced.

Microcosmic Garden is just beautiful. Robert Steven Connett has a great eye (and brush) for one of my favorite subjects — bugs. If you like things that crawl, fly, flutter, and creep, you’re going to love this puzzle. But really, if you just like gorgeous art with striking colors and incredible detail, this is a great pick.

(Side note: I went to Art & Fable’s site to grab that link and found that R.S. Connett has a new puzzle coming soon, “Orb Weavers.” So, in the process of writing this post I ended up placing a new order for three more puzzles.)

Though it’s only 500 pieces, don’t start it thinking you’ll be done in an hour. Did I mention there’s a lot of detail? Most people will take some time on this one, even avid puzzlers, I believe. But it’s a fun, relaxing build; the challenge isn’t frustrating, it’s thoroughly enjoyable. If you haven’t treated yourself to an Art & Fable puzzle yet, consider starting with this one!
