Halfway Points

Time for another treasure hunting scenario: you’ve figured out that a treasure or waypoint lies halfway between one point and another. In this (hypothetical) case, I’ve puzzled out that a park in Fort Smith, Arkansas and another in Carlsbad, New Mexico, are the keys to my next (hypothetical) step.

Something lies halfway between these two places, but given that we’re talking 600 miles, my best guess at the 300 mile mark could be a fairly broad area. I’d like something precise like…coordinates. To the internet!

I’m going to use a tool at a site called Movable Type. It’s pretty simple. Enter two points (you can use a couple of different coordinate formats and the site gives you the distance, bearings, and midpoint of the line in between those points!

I’ve found that most of my favorite mapping programs (Bing Maps, Google Maps, etc) don’t accept the coordinate format used in that midpoint identification, so I’ll use my favorite coordinate converter to get the decimal versions.

Once I have those decimal coordinates, I can easily find that midpoint. If my hypothetical clues were correct, looks like I’ll be doing some hypothetical digging!
