Mapping Intersecting Circles

Here’s the scenario: you’re skipping work so you can pursue a treasure hunt, and you’ve unraveled an exciting clue. You have two addresses, and you’ve figured out that the treasure lies exactly 50 miles from each address. Next task? Figure out what spots are 50 miles from each of your addresses.

Atlist.com has a nice (and free) tool for doing exactly this. Go to their website, choose the “Radius & Circles” option, and here we go.

First step, type in your first address and choose a match from the drop down menu.

Atlist will automatically add a 5km/3.11m circle around that location. You may have to zoom in and out on the map and move the map to see it; it doesn’t automatically center on the location you chose.

When the radius circle is selected (you can tell because it has the dot “handles” in the center and around the circle) you can change the radius to 50 miles using the input at the bottom of the screen.

Next, add your second address, and change the radius of this circle to 50 miles.

See the two intersections of the circles? You can zoom in close to get a better idea of how you can get to those spots. And since this is Google maps in the background, you can change to satellite and other views for additional information.

Hope you find this helpful in your treasure hunts. If it’s made you want to get out and solve some puzzles, why not join the first Golden Mantis Hunt?
